Hatchetwork is
a near lifelong dream of childhood friends, and a strong conviction
thereof. The band formed in the later half of 1999, and has had
more than one lineup. The original members consisted of Jimmie and
Derek both on guitars, Jeff on vocals, and Johnny Beard on drums.
After a short venture with the band, Johnny moved on to other
things. Enter drummer Michael Wisdom. Michael was with the band
for the better part of a year, but eventually decided to pursue
conflicting musical interests. The year 2000 rolled around and
Hatchetwork was still minus a bassist and a percussionist.
Convinced that someone would come out of the woodwork to complete
their team, the three members continued to practice and hone their
skills. The idea that Justin Morris, long time friend, and Derek’s
cousin, just might be what the band needed proved to be true. In
late 2001 Justin tried out and took on full time drumming duties for
Hatchetwork. The band was still in need of a bassist. Close to a
year passed and the boys of Hatchetwork found themselves still
searching for someone to hold down the bottom end. A couple of
failed tryouts and a blown guitar amp later, Derek picked up the
bass. The Hatchetwork team was finally complete. In July of 2003
Hatchetwork was offered their first paying gig. The show was a
success, and soon the band was assembling a small army of followers.
As popularity expanded in the
Austin
metal scene, Hatchetwork entered The Backroom’s ”
Battle
of the Bands”. The boys destroyed the opposition, taking top
honors. The prize for first place…one thousand dollars towards
recording time, which was surely put to good use. With the help
from their winnings, and many personal financial sacrifices,
Hatchetwork completed their debut album Spineless.
The album was released in September of 2004. Judging from the
overwhelming turnout at the c.d. release, Hatchetwork’s hard work
had paid off. The four members continued to dominate the metal
scene in Austin through the rest of 2004. Derek left the band at
the end of the year but returned in the fall of 2005. With the
original lineup back in tact, Hatchetwork is ready to destroy once
again! |
